Himachal Pradesh provides natural habitat to a very diverse and unique variety of western Himalayan fauna. Amongst pheasants, Monal, Kallij, Koklass, Cheer, Red Jungle Fowl, Western Tragopan and Peacock are found in HP. There are unique species of herbivores like Ibex, Serow, Blue Sheep, Himalayan Tahr, Barking Deer, Goral, Sambar etc. Carnivores include Common Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Brown Bear, Tibetan Wolf etc. Because of difficult nature of hilly terrain and sporadic nature of different species of wild animals and birds, very few people have adequate knowledge about wildlife of HP. So, scientifically designed Zoos/Nature Parks can play a vital role in displaying hill fauna in natural surroundings and sensitizing the people about need of wildlife Conservation and creating empathy towards them.
To fulfill above objectives, Himalayan Nature Park Kufri has been set up at Kufri having lush temperate forest forming an ideal habitat for most of the western Himalayan fauna. This Nature Park is spread over 90 hectare of area. The Himalayan Nature Park Kufri is a Small Zoo recognized by the ‘Central Zoo Authority’ of India. This is the only zoo in northern India to showcase western Himalayan fauna and attracts approximately 1.25 lac visitors from across the country.
For Management of zoos in Himachal Pradesh “HP Zoos & Conservation Breeding Society” has been set up. The Society has taken up various works/activities to develop the Himalayan Nature Park. Funding for the society is through the sale of tickets, vehicle parking charges and other miscellaneous items. You will appreciate that it takes a lot of time, money, hard work, and dedicated people to take care of our amazing animals. We are always on the lookout for people who want to help out. HP Zoo Conservation Breeding Society has launched a scheme of adoption of animals/birds kept in our Zoo for seeking support from the growing entrepreneurs/organizations/institutions/individuals.
Minimum adoption of the animals/birds is for one year which can be extended for the desired period with the consent of the adopter.
By adopting animals/birds through this programme, you not only help in the care and feeding of those animals/birds, but also support important education and conservation programs in the Zoo. By adopting an animal or a bird, you will also help to save many more. It’s a unique way to support our wildlife conservation efforts, and to create a special bond with the Zoo. For this noble cause, you are requested to adopt animals/birds kept in our Zoo. You can choose animals/birds which suit your fancy, or budget.
